Is it okay to give alcohol as a welcoming gift?

“We just moved into a new home and we left each neighbor a bottle of wine and whiskey with a note to say hello and hopefully make friends.
One neighbor has a 15 year old who got to the package before his parents and they found him passed out with the bottles. They’re furious that we left that on their porch.
Were we wrong to give that as a gift? How can we make it up to them?”
